Getting To Gray

February 14, 2017 by Heidi Leave a Comment

Do you find yourself struggling between eating out of control and “dieting”? When you struggle with binge eating, you often try to compensate for bingeing with strict food intake. Unfortunately this usually keeps the cycle going, which can lead to feeling frustrated and discouraged. If left untreated, binge eating can lead to depression, self-esteem issues, anger and hopelessness.
When working on changing your relationship with food one important factor to keep in mind is that food is not good and food is not bad, it’s just food. It is our attitude about food that causes us to label it as “good or bad”. When you make peace with food you will no longer feel controlled by food.
When dealing with Binge Eating Disorder (BED) often suffers want to know “why” they are so out of control with food? The reasons are as varied as the individual sufferer. For some it is habit. For instance, if you eat at night in front of the TV, the TV becomes a “cue” to binge. Another reason many struggle with BED is because food is socially acceptable. Food is everywhere and most of the activities we do socially involve food. Some confuse emotional hunger with physical hunger, and many use food as a coping mechanism. Our struggles with food can be a combination of one or all of the above.
How do you learn how to change your relationship with food? It is a process. It takes time, dedication and perseverance. First and foremost, embrace the fact that you can change your destructive eating patterns. Feel empowered that you have the ability to choose how you relate to food. Most importantly, don’t make it about not being able to have something “you want in the moment” make it about not wanting it.
If you are ready to change your relationship to food, give me a call and let’s get started on your journey of healing.

Are You Ready?

October 29, 2016 by Heidi Leave a Comment

Are you finding that you are spending more time “managing” your eating disorder?  Eating disorders are progressive.  You may feel that you can stop your destructive behaviors any time you want but when you try to stop and you can’t, it can be a scary feeling.

Are you tired of saying “this is the last time” regarding bingeing?   Do you find yourself in a perpetual cycle of binge eating and deprivation?  This destructive eating pattern actually “feeds” the binge/restrict cycle.  Dieting/detoxing/prepackage foods/gray sheet all contribute to the “all or nothing” mentality that leads to guilt and shame.

Eating disorders quickly become unmanageable and soon you will find that it has taken over.  With the right intervention, you can make peace with food and learn how to live again.   Are you ready to change your relationship with food?  Give me a call and let’s start your journey of recovery.
